The 36th annual Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops are scheduled for June 29 – July 11 at the University of Louisville.
The workshops are open to beginners and advanced students, and have in the past drawn more than 400 students from 42 states and 26 countries.
Applications are being taken now, and students are encourage to apply early. Piano slots fill first.
The workshops' namesake, Aebersold, is an award-winning jazz educator, who since his retirement from U of L, has continued to host the workshops. Many of the workshops' 70-plus instructors are award-winning musicians in their own right: guitarist Dave Stryker, pianists Andy LaVerne and Steve Allee, saxophonists Don Braden, Antonio Hart, Eric Alexander and James Moody, bassists Rufus Reid and John Goldsby and drummer Ed Soph.
Free recitals by faculty are held at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at U of L’s Comstock Hall; student concerts will be held in both the Comstock and Bird recital halls beginning at 1 p.m. on both Fridays.
Two large concerts will be held at 8 p.m. on July 2 and 9 at Masterson’s, 1830 S. Third St., (502) 636-2511. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 Louisville Jazz Society members and $5 students/camp attendees, and are available at the door the night of show.
